Sports Tournament Rules & Guidelines

Due to the unique circumstances of Covid-19, modifications of certain Tournament Competition Rules for a specific event may be made. These will be in support of the objectives of the health, safety and well-being of our event participants, attendees, and servants.  Any such changes shall be communicated to a Team Representative in advance of any event to which the modifications will apply.

Note:  Any event that takes place, not covered under the following rules, will be evaluated by the game or convention official.

Behavior
Basketball Tournament
Volleyball Tournament

BEHAVIOR:
1. First rule is love, love, love. Do all things in love.
2. Please remember this is not the WNBA or Olympics; there are no scouts coming to recruit you. This is a FUN event.
3. The referees and scorekeepers are servants; please show them respect and do not argue.
4. No inappropriate language or your team will be disqualified.  No warnings will be given.
5. Show sportsmanship and Christian behavior at all times.
6. No jewelry or accessories can be worn during games.
7. Please return all jerseys back to the servants immediately upon completion of your game.

8. Again, inappropriate behavior will not be tolerated.  This includes spectators as well.
9. Enjoy playing and have fun participating in the tournaments.

BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT:
1. In bracket play, the bottom team listed will be the home team.
2. The home team will wear the lighter colored jersey.
3. Each team can ask a willing servant to coach and help substitute players.  A coach is not required.
4. Each team will have 5 minutes to warm-up before their first game only.  No warm-ups for each game after.
5. Game length for 5-team double elimination will be two 6-minute halves for a total time of 12 minutes.
6. Game length for 6-team single elimination will be two 8-minute halves for a total of 16 minutes.
7. Only one overtime will be afforded.  Overtime period will be 2 minutes.  If there is a second overtime, “sudden death” will be implemented (whoever scores 1st is the winner).
8. Clock is stopped for only timeouts or injuries.
9.  No free throws for any fouls.  Ball will be inbounded.
10. Halftime will be 3 minutes.
11. Each team will be allowed 4 thirty-second timeouts per game.  One additional timeout will be allowed for the overtime period.  Players are permitted to sit on the bench during a timeout.
12. All players on the team must play during the game.
13. Teams are made up of 8 players or less.
14. Failing to show up on time for your scheduled game is considered a forfeit.  The servants will send a Remind notification once and wait 2 minutes before the game is considered forfeited.
15. Only players and coaches are on the bench.  All others must watch from the bleachers.  If a non-player is found near the bench, they will be removed from the game area by a servant and will not be able to return to watch the games.

VOLLEYBALL TOURNAMENT:
1. All calls by the officials are final.  No arguing.
2. Teams are made up of 9 or less players. All players on the team must play during the game.
3. Amount of games played:
  • Only 1 game will be played in 5-team double elimination.  Game will be up to 21. Teams will switch sides when a score of 10 is reached.
  • If there are 6 or more teams, a single elimination tournament will be instituted. Teams will play 3 games up to 11 and switch sides after each game.
  • Games are played by rally scoring; teams must win by two, with a 23-point cap in double elimination or 13-point cap in single elimination. Rally scoring means there is a point for every serve.
4. Players will rotate in at the right, back position (server) on each rotation. A rotation must occur after each side-out and in the same order throughout the game. Players MUST remain in their rotated spot during each play.
5. A “let” serve that clears the net is considered playable. The receiving team may not block or spike a serve. The server’s feet may not touch the court lines until after contact has been made with the volleyball.
Players in the back row are NOT permitted to run up and spike the ball.

6. Players are not permitted to touch the net. Incidental contact of the net by a player’s hair or insignificant contact with the net by a player not involved in the action is not considered a fault.
7. A player may touch the posts, ropes or other objects outside the total length of the net, provided this does not interfere with play.  If a player touches the net, the opposing team gets the point and the serve.  This shall be determined at the sole discretion of the official.
8. A team is allowed a maximum of three successive contacts to return the ball. Players may use any part of their body to volley so long as such contact with the ball does not constitute a “carry” or a “lift”. A “block” is not considered a team hit and after “block” contact, a team is entitled to three hits to return the ball. The player who made the block may also make the first contact in the same series.
9. Court lines are considered “IN”.  If the ball touches the antennas or any part of the net outside the playing court, the play is immediately ruled dead and the point will go to the receiving team.
10. Each team will be allowed 2 thirty-second timeouts per game.  One additional timeout will be allowed for the overtime period.  Players are permitted to sit on the bench during a time out.
11. Failing to show up on time for your scheduled game is considered a forfeit.  The servants will send a Remind notification once and wait 2 minutes before the game is considered forfeited.
12. Headbands and kneepads are optional.
